Follow the traces of “Mad King†Ludwig and visit his fancy palace Herrenchiemsee! Besides the fairy- tale castles Neuschwanstein and Linderhof this was the third palace of the legendary Bavarian king Ludwig II. in which he tried to fulfill his long-cherished dream of building a “New Versailles†as a symbol of absolutism. Herrenchiemsee was Ludwig´s last, still unfinished project before he died under mysterious circumstances, not known up to this day, at an age of 41 in 1886.
Located on the largest island in Lake Chiemsee - the so-called â€Bavarian Sea†- the castle of Herrenchiemsee is just a stone´s throw away from Salzburg - about half the way to Munich.
On this tour we leave the city of Salzburg to the west and drive through several beautiful Bavarian villages until we reach the town of Prien at Lake Chiemsee. From there a ferry boat will take us to the island of Herrenchiemsee. After a short walk we will finally arrive at the imposing palace and you will have the opportunity to join a guided tour through its splendid royal rooms. In addition you will also have time to visit the “King Ludwig II-museumâ€, which depicts the life and the early death of this extravagant Bavarian king. After these interesting impressions and some Bavarian refreshments we will start driving back to Salzburg.
